The Master Swordmaker, the stealthy samurai, what are your thoughts and theories on this new immortal? What magics could he know, who is his Master, whose side is he on?

Niten is the new Scatty. He'll be very important if Sophie is to survive.

It is fantasy that puts us apart from the beasts. Anyone can say what is. Few can say what if.

niten is awesome. as for magic, i dont think he needs to know any. he could probably use his aura when fighting, but it seems like all he needs is his blades. which is awesome. and i think he can be trusted. kinda feels like hes a neutral party on it all, but if it came down to it, he'd fight by nick and perry's side. and his master, that idk. maybe we will find out in warlock.

If all he needed was his blades, he wouldn't have been sent flying across the room by Dee right before finishing him off. I think that he's probably a master of water, seeing as his master is the God of all that flows. It would make sense, a master of water could further train and help Sophie.

very good point. lol. he just seems like thats all he would need, ya know? the persona he gives off. at least in my point of view. and it very well may be. that would be great for her.

He was awesome. I agree that if Sophie is to survive, she's going to need him since everyone else is gone. It's just Niten, Sophie and Perenelle now. Yeah, he could be the new Scatty, I mean he beat her in combat. As for his magical talents, that remains to be seen, though I'm sure he knows some stuff. I do believe that he and Sophie who are in San Francisco now are going to be in the heart of the conflict when the monsters run a muck.

I don't think I'd go as far as to say that he's the new Scatty, while he is the only one to defeat her in combat. How do we know that it was only a match with swords, and not other skills where Scatty is powerful. Though I wouldn't include Perry in the group of people who defend against the monsters just yet. I'm not so sure about her anymore, originally, after the Sorceress, I would have thought, yeah she's totally going to help them when they are reunited, but now I'm not so sure. How do we know that she can be included in the group of the three with Niten and Sophie. I think those two are going to be the ones that defend the city. I'm sure that Niten will probably teach Sophie a ew tactics, seeing as he is the famous Miyamoto, he's sure to know how to win a battle under these circumstances. It will be interesting to see how it turns out in the end.

I agree, Niten is not Scatty, there can be only one, but he's pretty good with a blade. He fills the role Scatty has voided, as combat specialist. And we don't know the extent of his auric powers yet, I think that in the diary entry from The Warlock speaks to the Sorceress having an agenda to play her part, Sophie and Niten are going to need her, they can't defend the city alone. Nick is in a coma, Josh has betrayed them all, and their other friends are in the past. And plus Dee's going to kill the Immortal Humani anyway, one by one and have Dare take control of the monsters. But, it'll be good to see Niten in combat with some monsters and maybe he'll teach Sophie something.

I just thought that I might want to add that Niten is the Buddhist name of Miyamoto Musashi, that's why he uses that name. Though luckily I know a lot about him already, so any research that I might need for the next book is unnecessary for now.

God of all that flows? Um, where did you find that info? I'm fairly certain it's not in the book.

I agree i dont think Niten has any elemental magics like Scatty and Aoife and Joann and Shakespeare, i think hes probobly learned useful spells to make swords out of his aura or to make armor but nothing more. I wonder what his swords are though, they can't be any of the 4 swords of power or anything cuz dee has them but i wonder what? So that means their weaker than those four swords. Originally i thought it was the 2 other swords, joyeous and the other one but its not.

I don't know if its mentioned in the book, I think it is, but I don't know where. His Elder master is Benzaiten, whose sanskrit name is Sarasvatî Devî. She is the goddess of everything that flows, including water, words (and knowledge, by extension), speech, eloquence, and music. Her sanskrit name also means, "Flowing water"

Yeah, I feel like a failure. Despite the fact that Niten was my favorite of the new characters, somehow Benzaiten totally slipped my mind while I was typing that post. But we do not technically know for certain that Benzaiten is his Master, or even that Benzaiten is still alive. Just saying.

The Witch believes through the memories per Sophie that Benzaiten is Niten's master, I guess we could point to the flashback of the samurai and the little Elder on the dragon. To play devil's advocate, he didn't confirm it nor did anyone outside of Sophie and Perenelle bring it up. They believe Benzaiten is one of the Great Elders and most of them disappeared anyway and yeah we don't know if she's alive still. So I guess its true nothings exactly certain.

Here you go Rom, this is the quote that gave you the details:

QUOTE ( p. 142 The Necromancer)
Niten has traveled this world and the nearby Shadowrealms in search of opponents to fight simply to hone his skills. He was supposed to have been made immortal sometime in the seventeenth century by Benzaiten, who many—including the Witch—believe may even be one of the ancient Great Elders. Niten was also known as Miyamoto Musashi.”

But Sophie's memories didn't say anything about her being his master....Just because she made him immortal, doesn't mean she necessarily pushed the normal I'm-the-boss-you-serve-me-now contract on him. It is possible it was a gift for saving her life or something of the sort. Or maybe she was killed, and he has no Master now, like Dare. Just playing Devil's Advocate, because most likely, if Benzaiten rides a dragon, she's too awesome to die, and too smart to give the greatest swordsman alive immortality with no reins. Because dragons are that awesome.

well that is typically how the whole gift of immortality thing works, Elder makes humani an immortal in exchanged for a lifetime of servitude.

Well Billy was made immortal because he saved his master's life, and also Tammuz made Palamedes immortal as a curse. As for Germain, and The Bard, I still think that they have a master but it was like an exchange, something like saving its life for immortality.I don't have any evidence for Germain except instinct but I have a quote from the Necromancer page 255 for the Bard.

Yeah, I said that. But we don't know for certain that Benzaiten was ever his master, and we certainly don't know that she still is. I'm just throwing thoughts out there.

First of all that's what the witch thinks, and we know that she is hardly ever wrong. So I think that it is enough evidence there to conclude that she is Niten's master.

No, she just thinks Benzaiten was responsible for his immortality, I'm saying we don't know for certain that Benzaiten was/is his master. There could possibly be a difference. We have not been told that the immortality "contract" always comes with the servitude.
